Hi there! This plan is for the next TWO DAYS!  Make note. - Ms. Chufo

Wednesday, March 18th, 2015 and Thursday, March 19th, 2015 (AKA: Wheel of Fortune Day)
H9:
  • Tonight, please review the logical fallacies handout and be ready to look for fallacies in your play, Antigone.
  • Also, please take notes on the backstory of Jason and the Argonauts. What is the myth and history of Jason?  You should have his story, like Oedipus' in your notes. Yes, yes.
  • Thursday - Outside reading and fun times. Today you will have 30 minutes to read your outside reading book.  Remember that next Friday, you will be tasked with a PechaKucha about your book.  See attached handout.  Woohoo!  Thank you, Sammy for requesting this assignment.  You are such a star!  ; )
  • Thursday - the last sixty minutes of class I would like you to gather into teams of four or fewer to find fallacies throughout the play. Each person should have a running list with the fallacy, the person speaking, the page number, the fallacy type and why.  We wil share out on Friday!

Business Management: I feel terrible about today, but I am so impressed with how industrious you all appeared to be regarding moving your companies forward.  Please note that Ken will not be with us tomorrow and you will have the entire 90 minutes to work.  However, you will be asked to bring in a five minute update per team on the status of your company (Zach, you too!). \

The Five Minute Update: You need the following: something to project (Yes, we should have something to look at)
Consider the following as topics:  Updates on design and execution of company; Monetization strategy and what your current spending has been; your marketing plan; your launch date and hours of operation; Anything else that you are proud of and you need to share.  This will be a timed presentation (5 minutes) and the folks who pitched in the competition MAY NOT present on Friday.   Yes, this is a grade. : )

Creatives:
Tonight you may begin to work on your one-week assignment.  Consider something that has always annoyed you or made you curious: A commonly held view; a misconception and explore it with a team of people to produce the following:
  • A script
  • A storyboard
  • A five minute video
Thursday -
Assignment 4:  Thinking Creatively and teamwork -    “Debunking a Commonly held Viewpoint, or Misconception”
Students may work in teams of 4 to 6 coming up with a concept to debunk or explore in a Five minute video.  There are three components to the project:
1) Write a short script (click on this link to see how) (1 page per minute) in screenwriting format   Note: You must include facts and research within your dialogue.
2) Storyboard of the concept (click on this link to see an example)
3) The film. This will be due next Friday.  (So, you have some work to do.)  Woohoo.
Here is my suggested plan:
  • ·         Thursday – Brainstorm and research topic.  You must have resources and facts placed within your piece
  • ·         Friday – Write the script and conceptualize the storyboard
  • ·         Monday – Finalize the storyboard –tweak and revise the script.
  • ·         Tuesday – People start memorizing lines and plan the filming; start filming
  • ·         Wednesday- Filming day two and editing
  • ·         Thursday – Editing and gathering all pieces.
  • ·         Friday – Film festival.
Tuesday, March 17th, 2015
H9: We talked about the play and had an awesome quiz.  Tonight, you are tasked with reviewing your pronoun notes (see handout--in case your notes are tragic) and anticipate a quiz (per the request of Sammy!)  Woohoo.

Business Management: Ken will be coming on Friday of this week. Be ready to report out what has happened this week --prep a 5 minute report that includes the following:  Monetizing update, Marketing plan, What you have done thus far, hiccups you are experiencing with moving forward, questions you have for Ken.

Creatives: Relax. Think about your blog project.

Monday, March 16th, 2015
H9: Today we reviewed the play, Antigone.  Tonight your homework is to answer the following questions:
  1. Where does the Chorus stand (in position and favor) along the trajectory of the play?  Where do they show support in the beginning, middle and end.  Consider the major "pulse points" of the play: Antigone & Ismene (gates of Thebes); Creon's Kingship speech; Guard & Creon exchange (subverted revealed); Creon & Antigone & Ismene (confrontation and punishment scene); Creon & Haemon (son confronts father scene); Creon & Antigone (final punishment); Creon & Tiresias (seeking prophecy); Creon & Servant (final punishment and outcome).
  2. What is the real tragedy of this play?  Yes, a lot of people die, but what's the irony?
  3. Where does Creon seems to shift his punishment and why? There are two points in the play where he changes his plan.  Why?
  4. What is the function of Tiresias in the play?
  5. Find the most compelling or powerful quotations (in your opinion) within our play.
Business Management:
  • Please fill out the weekly action plan form that I handed out today in class (see attached if you were absent).  I will be collecting them tomorrow to grade for the week. : )
  • We will not have a computer lab tomorrow or access to chromebooks.  Plan accordingly.  Also, for the next two days we will have CAHSEE exams so our class periods are shortened.

CREATIVES:
HW: Your assignment is due tomorrow - focus - dialogue.

CREATIVES:
Creating a scene with tension--where constructs of power are present.
Prompt for the day:
Imagine a conversation you WISH you had and make it happen on paper.  (One student met her murdered uncle in heaven and got to tell him her regrets; one had a conversation with a grandparent who had been in the Holocaust.)

Our goal this unit is to work on and craft better dialogue within our work.  Additionally, we will explore creating distinct voices who hide their real desires, have agendas, and trap emotionally or physically using subtext.

For inspiration:
  • Writing dialogue prompts from Pinterest.
  • Here is a random first line of dialogue generator.
  • More first line writing prompts for dialogue.

Business Management:
Two goals: This week our focus is to "vet" the idea and to train up on Food Handler's so we can test for competancy.
Take the following list and research the viability of your ideas.  Ask yourself the following questions:
      1. What is the problem I am solving?
      2. Do we have customers who would by this?  How do you know?
      3. Is there competition? Does this already exist?  If so, how would you differentiate?  Is there a need to differentiate or did someone else,        unbeknownst to you, already create your idea?
     4. How much would it cost to launch your idea?
     5.  How will this idea make money?  How can you monetize it?

Take your five ideas and investigate in the computer lab.  See if you can defend any of your ideas.  When we return in class, you will pitch your revise list.

H9:
WOTD: iambic pentameter, volte, turn, rhyming couplet
HW: Please create a draft of a sonnet about a "couch" so that you and your partner have something to work with tomorrow.  Your object is to follow the structure:
  • 14 lines in iambic pentameter (u /)
  • 3 quatrains (four line stanzas)
  • 1 rhyming couplet (two lines that rhyme)
  • First, create a problem with said couch -For example,  "No one upon me sits they say in jest"  . . .
  • Then develop the problem - (Perhaps the couch is in a museum and inside a glass case, longing to touch all the passers by (this is quite sad, no?))
  • Develop the problem further - The love-desperate couch plans an escape with a Turkish rug in a display next door.
  • Solve the problem - The rug and couch fall in love and end up in the same display case,

Bring in your typed draft tomorrow.  Be ready to play and tweak with a partner.
Also, be ready for a tiny quiz on sonnets.  Woohoo!

Here are some notes on sonnets, just in case you need additional help.

You have an extra day to perfect your lesson on your business model.  Remember that you have five minutes to teach us! Good luck!

Work on your vignettes.  Play with the advice your colleague gave you and make sure you experiment toward failure.  Remember what I said in class. This course is about you having the freedom to take risks. There is nothing to be gained with a safe writing assignment.  Be bold. Try something new and have the courage to fail--toward your authentic voice.

Also, bring in a book that you love, love, love.  Tomorrow is all about you.

Happy evening to you.

H9:
WOTD: emulate, copious, sentient
WGO: In case you are dying to know what is going on in that picture from yesterday: Chinese Swimmers
  • HW: You have FOUR memory poems to analyze, annotate, tear up.  If you are not sure how to analyze a poem, check out the back of the handout (I gave you in class).
  • Remember that you don't need to know anything about poetry (although it certainly helps) to say something smart about a poem. Look for patterns, weirdness, unusual word choices.  Mark it up and have fun.  READ THE POEMS ALOUD to yourself and to your family (good times).
  • In case you are curious about Auden's "Unknown Citizen"
  • Below are the poems again, just in case you had a tragic experience in your back pack and can't find it OR you are really nerdy and need to annotate in Word.   Happy Thursday!

Happy Friday Eve!
Business Management folks!

  • Today we spent some time considering "our" brand - What do you stand for?  Who are you?  See the image description above to help you.
  • You were tasked with creating a Pecha Kucha presentation (6 slides, 20 seconds) to convey who you are and what you bring to this class.  Yes, we will present tomorrow.  Yes, you may share it with me through GoogleDocs, bring in a thumb drive, or send it to me as an attachment.
  • Woohoo!  Enjoy.   Here is the official pecha kucha website to inspire you (remember that these are the full length presentations (20x20)).

Creatives!
Today we are exploring our first assignment and diving in.
Wednesday, January 28th, 2015
H9: Welcome!
WOTD: peruse, potable, automaton
  • Today we read an article about the "Rise of the Machines."  I asked you to write to what extent you agree or disagree with the author.
  • Hopefully, you took a position and were able to defend yourself.  Because I tasked you with writing an essay on the first day of class--quite cruel, I know--I am gifting you with no homework tonight.  You were all lovely today and I look forward to getting to know all of you as we end up your freshman year with English.  Have a great night.  Spend time with your family and congratulations on completing your first day of English class.
  • Below is that Gattaca trailer from class.  To the right, using robotics, laser rangefinders, GPS and smart feedback tools, Dennis Hong is building a car for drivers who are blind. It's not a "self-driving" car, he's careful to note, but a car in which a non-sighted driver can determine speed, proximity and route -- and drive independently.  What do you think?
  • Connect the dots. . . how are all of these ideas, connected?
ROP Business:
  • Today we talked about the difference between a logo, an identity, and a brand.  Check out this article to help you: "What is a brand, Anyway?"
  • What's the difference between a brand, identity and a logo?
  • Then, we discussed how to write your first professional e-mail: http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Formal-Email
  • Below are two different formats of the same assignment.   I also included the presentation I shared with you today in class.  That's the pdf below.

Prepare for your presentations starting on Tuesday!  Wooohoo.

Tuesday, January 13, 2015
ROP Business Management:

  • EVERYONE NOTE the new changes to our schedule for the final week of school:  Our FINAL PITCHES WILL BE NOW ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 22nd.
  • Friday will be your last opportunity to gain feedback on your pitches.  Next Wednesday will be our awards ceremony for the class.  Next THURSDAY, again, our final pitches.
  • Tomorrow, I will be out but your plan is as follows:
  • Part 1 of class you will be looking at Duke's Annual Pitch Contest (See link on youtube below).  These are college students pitching business ideas as part of their business degree.  Note that they have much less time to pitch, but that your presentations are already quite evolved comparatively speaking.  Take what is WORKING for each presentation and consider pivoting or tuning your presentation accordingly.  Start the video at 11:30.
  • Second half of the period we will be going to the lab to work on what's left.  Remember that Friday is all about your pitches.  Have them timed and ready to go.
Honors 9:
Please read and annotate Books 13 & 15 in the Odyssey.  Only read the annotated summary on mythWeb.com for Book 14.

Creative Writing: Continue to work on your projects. . .
Monday, January 12, 2015
ROP Business Management:
Please note that I have updated grades and have some items missing for folks who have not presented their "year end reports" for their business teams.  Just talk to me tomorrow and I can make adjustments accordingly.
  • Do work on your pitch decsk and remember that THIS FRIDAY, we have a person coming to review your pitches.  You have five minutes and  he will be giving you honest feedback about the viability of your company/idea.
  • Consider the following as your refine your pitches:  wear appropriate attire for your presentation; have business cards printed to hand out; polish your presentation --no grammar issues; polish your pitch--practice, practice practice.
  • We will be looking for the following within your pitch deck
  1. You are addressing a problem or need.
  2. You tell a story that connects us with your product/service.
  3. Executive summary - You can clearly describe what it is very quickly.
  4. You have done your homework about the industry and trends in it.
  5. You address the competition and how your are different
  6. You include relevant financials -- start up costs,
  7. Address why we should invest in you.
  8. You end the pitch in a powerful or compelling way.

Tomorrow's plan: We will practice the remaining pitches for last minute feedback.  Wednesday, you will have half of the period to work on refining your pitches.  Thursday, you will use the entire period to practice the pitch with another team.  Friday will be your FINAL practice pitch with Keith Robinson.

H9:
Check out Greek Roots Wordlist 3 posted below.  Also, please read and annotate Books 11 & 12 in the Odyssey.

Team presentations tomorrow.  Get ready to pitch!  You will be graded on the following elements:
1. Financials - Do you address costs of your products/services, or start-up costs in your presentation? Do you address how an investor will make money with your product/services?
2. Do you know your competition?  Do you know details or just a bit of "Google" information.  It's important that you convey knowledge about your competition and the industry sector you are in.
3. Do you seem enthusiastic or engaged in your project?  This is a project or idea of your choice so you should feel good about your ideas and that should convey to the audience.  Connect with us and convince us that you are the "right" folks for the job.
4. Does everyone have something to contribute?  Do all of you see to know your stuff?

  • Today we are working on finanlizing our team Year End Review to present on Friday
  • OR to work on our start-up costs for our crazy business ideas.
  • Do not be overwhelmed by the line items.  The spreadsheet I posted yesterday was do give you an idea of what costs you might incur and not think about at first.  Think about how much money you think it will cost to make your product.  Then, figure out your break even point.  How many units will you need to sell, to be at "0" and then how many will you need to cover your expenses and make a profit.  Woohoo!
  • Your final spreadsheet can be a very simplified version like the one attached here:
  • We will be looking at our pitch decks more carefully next week, including the thought of creating a logo, having a tagline, and what color palette we want to chose for our presentation! Woohoo.  Here are some thoughts about color to get you started:

  • Friday (Paninis): Caroline, Jessica S., Tori W., Nick b., Jessica F., Olivia , Phillip

Today is ALL about reflection and recommemdations.
It’s time to take a look at the results of your 7 week takeover and reflect on how your team performed and how it could improve in the future.  What did you learn about teamwork?  What did you accomplish as a group?  What wasn’t a success and why?  What would you do differently if you had the chance to do it over?  What do you recommend for next term's teams?  This is your team’s time to reflect, celebrate, and make suggestions for the following business teams:

Executive Team, Finance Team, Marketing, Curators, Food Team, Event Planning, Eco Team, Hydration Nation Team

In a 5 minute presentation, your team will reflect on the following:

1.       Your successes (All of the things you accomplished and learned)

2.       Your failures with solutions (What should you have done? What could you have done?)

3.       What do you recommend for next terms team?  Be specific.  How many people should be on your team?  What do you think this next term should focus on? What projects should they complete or start-up?

Please share these presentations with me in GoogleDocs by the end of the period.  We will be presenting these on Thursday as a class, but I want to see them so I can give you feedback.  Happy presenting.
This week we will explore our start-up costs for our project and continue with presentations for our business ideas.

Work on your poem.

H9:  HW: Read Chapters 5 & 6 in Lord of the Flies.

Today we will explore PowerPoint Paper topics.  In groups of 4 or 5 you will be tasked with developing a thesis statement from what you have read thus far.  For each team, you will discuss and agree upon a thesis statement.  It must pass the following test before you submit it to me for approval:
  1.       It must be arguable
  2.       It should not convey conventional wisdom (Friendship is important), nor should it be a statement of fact (Romeo and Juliet both die in the play in part because their parents are enemies).
  3.       It should have a strong verb and be in active tense.
  4.       It should be something that needs evidence from the text to prove (in other words, it's not apparent just from reading the play; you should need to convince the reader with evidence).

BE SMART:  If you present a thesis to me that does not meet the above test, then your team may lose points.
Once you gain approval, your thesis idea will be "locked in" and NO OTHER TEAM MAY USE IT.

Once you have approval, each team member must focus on the following. . . finding one or two pieces of evidence that best prove your thesis thus far.  You must provide lead in, evidence in proper MLA format and explanation in bullet form for your quotation.  If there are FIVE people, you will have five pieces of evidence, if there are four, you will have four, etc.  The order you put your argument in is CRITICAL.  As a team of lawyers, you need to build the BEST case for your theory, hence, be sure to ORDER your evidence carefully. Discuss where each person should go and make sure that you build a cohesive argument.

YOU WILL HAVE TWO DAYS to work on this in class.  Good luck!

“MAN is born free; and everywhere he is in chains. One thinks himself the master of others, and still remains a greater slave than they. How did this change come about? I do not know. What can make it legitimate? That question I think I can answer. Man is good.  Society makes him bad. We should return to the natural state.” - Jean Jacques Rousseau

  • HW; Please read and annotate Chapter 4, "Painted Faces and Long Hair" in Lord of the Flies
  • Today we watched two more teams share their ideas about an idealized or utopian society.  We had a quiz on Chapters 2 & 3, then discussed the book thus far.
  • Lastly, we have a video on whether or not "evil" is learned or biological (see below).  We shall discuss the finer points of learned or innate violence and how it connects to our story.

ROP Business: Let's revise those pitch decks!
Some of you may need to go BACK to the drawing board.  . . so you might want to read this:
  • "Starting a Business: The Idea Phase"
Here are some resources to get you thinking about where you need to go next:
  • Two Weeks to Start-up - Working on that pitch deck
  • Check out the US Census Bureau to find trends or data on your industry sector.

If you have researched your industry sector and you have data for your presentation. . . then, you should think about looking at start-up costs.  Look at this spreadsheet to give you an idea:

H9:
Read and annotate Chapter 3 in Lord of the Flies: "Huts on the Beach"  Remember: you are tracking very specific ideas as you annotate so that you have a paper topic when you are done reading the text.

Creative Writing:
  • Go on a quest to find a poet, poem you are willing to memorize because you thoroughly connect with it.  Practice, practice, practice. We shall have a small slam next Friday!  (Friday, December 12th)  To inspire you, here are some of my favorites: "Poison Tree" by William Blake; "Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night" by Dylan Thomas; "Mirror" by Sylvia Plath; and
  • NanoWrimo folks!  - Please send an e-mail to me with your certificate AND post your writing here on turnitin.com  the class ID is: 9138606 and the password is: Chufo
  • Tomorrow, the following folks will be sharing their blog projects or writing: Jake Swaney, Madhavi R., Anabella Bilicki, Hannah Gonzalez.
  • Here are two sample blogs to look at as you finish up, tweak or edit your own blogs:
  1. This one is from a student who only needed to do one week, so don't be confused, but I thought it was a great, honest piece about her experience: N Allen.
  2. In another vein, here is a recent blog about a woman's experience dealing with her dying husband.  The blog is honest and reads beautifully.  If you are interested, check out myhusband'stumor.com.  Below is the link to a "teaser" on a documentary about this brave couple.  And here is a link to an article about Aaron's obituary that you might find interesting.

ROP Business:
  • First day of revised pitches.  So far we have had two great ideas that need to be tweaked in some way: MugUT a temperature contolled mug for the perfect drink temperature every time and a Make up App that allows the customer to scan a magazine or picture on the web to find out how to get a similar product.
  • Tomorrow we will continue with our team pitches. What you may discover is that your idea already exists or is not a viable business, in which case you may have to go back to the drawing board.  It's tough to launch a new idea, as you can see from your first stab at it.
  • The lesson: Keep pivoting and thinking about the problem you are solving.
H9:
  • 1st half of class:  we worked on our idealized communities or utopias, based on a hypothetical crash landing with a small group of people.
  • Yes, we had a quiz on chapter 1: "The Sound of the Shell." Be sure to notice the details and read carefully.  As I announced in class today, you will need to annotate carefully as I will not be giving you anything specific to track.  Many of you mentioned fantastic ideas about what to track just from your experience with chapter 1.
  • HW: Read and annotate Chapter 2: "Fire on the Mountain."
Creative Writing:
  • Finish up your blogs if you have not done so already.  Be sure to review the guidelines.  And, please post your hyperlink in the GoogleDocument that we created for blog approval.
  • Here is a wonderful biography on Charles Wright.

ROP Business Management:
Today we had a fun day; we watched the Shark Tank and had a waffle party in celebration of the close of our 6 week takeover.  Here was the episode we watched, just in case you missed it!
H9: Today we wrote our Romeo and Juliet essays in class.  We turned in three items: Your essay, outline, and your annotations.
Remember that if you did not have your outline or annotations in class today you were to send it via e-mail BEFORE midnight.

Have a restful holiday break!  You deserve it.  Happy Thanksgiving.
Creative Writing:

ROP Business Management:
For those of you who are doing a Business Book Presentation in lieu of finishing out your job with a specific organizational team, here are the requirements.  This assignment will be due the Thursday we return from break.  FYI.  You will present on that day so make sure you send over your presentation BEFORE then so I can give you some feedback.  I can't wait to hear about what you've learned.

AGAIN, THIS IS ONLY FOR THOSE OF YOU  I HAVE SPOKEN TO ABOUT THIS ASSIGNMENT. . .
Business Book Research Assignment:
Welcome to the 5 slide, 5 minute business pitch deck on your business text of choice: (Make sure when you present, that you bring your text in so we can pass it around the room to determine if others might benefit from your research.  You have an e-book? No problem.  Bring your ipad and we can pass that around just as easily)

If you are teaming up with someone, make sure you double the slides and the time. Remember that if you bore us, that does not bode well.  Ten minutes is a LONG time to talk about a book.  Perhaps break it up; divide and conquer.  Good luck!

Here is an outline for the following:
  1. The essentials about the text – author, title, year published, idea behind the text, how it’s organized, what resources it has in it. How one might use it.
  2. About the author.  What can you tell us about the authors and why we should trust him/her/them?  What background information can you drum up on them?  Is this text a worthy source in your opinion? Why or why not?
  3. What problems of business is it solving?  What does this book aim to fix or address with its content?
  4. What did you learn?  If we don’t have time to read this text, what are the big ideas and main points this book is conveying? Don’t just summarize.  Be creative.  This is not your English class book report.  Wow us with your content.  It should be clear that you have read the entire text.
  5. The Send Off - How would you rate this text on a scale of 1 to 10 as helpful to you?  Why? Close with a specific example that applies to this text.  Tell us a business story that will capture the essence of this text!

Here's  a pitch to inspire you for our final project. . .

  • Check out what happened to GrooveBook recently.
  • Check out around 30 minutes into this Shark Tank episode to see the original GrooveBook Pitch.   What was their edge?  Their advantage?
  • Then check out the video to the right about two college students who mixed up nut butters in their free time to drum up a serious business venture.  Yes, they were on the Shark Tank and yes, someone invested!  Read about the details of their investment on the tank here.
H9: Finish up those outlines; yes, we are writing our papers in class tomorrow!  Woohoo!
Creative Writing:  Happy blogging and novel writing.

ROP Business Management: Some teams are moving forward, others. . .you need to pivot or retool your idea. Work on market segmentation for your business idea.  OR start again with your team to come up with a new idea.  A draft for your team will be due the week we return from break so we need to get those ideas cracking! : )

Here is a great article to help you think about whether to move forward or simply come up with something new: "Is your Startup Idea a Killer, or Should it be Killed?"

If you are back to the drawing board again, perhaps look at the "Business Idea Center" on Entrepreneur Online to get some ideas.
or look at what's trending.  Here's one resource on the UK's perspective on trending as well.

Check out the following video clips.  Consider how each product is differentiating its market through these ads?  What segment are they appealing to?  Is this Geographic?  by Demographic? Behavioral?  Psychographical?

H9: Essay Feedback:
H9: Relax and prepare for your essay on Friday.   Here is the feedback from your Compare/Contrast essays.  : )

  • Avoid overly saccharine statements about the writers.  For example, try to avoid statements like: “Both Sophocles and Euripides were outstanding writers in ancient Greece who used gorgeous language in their plays.  Oh, they were glorious. . .”  Ugh.  Need I write more?  You get my drift.
  • And, DO NOT SUMMARIZE the plot in the introduction. Get down to business.  Assume the reader has read both plays.
  • START ALL BODY PARAGRAPHS WITH A STRONG CLAIM.  Do not summarize or state a fact as your claim or topic sentence in your paragraphs.  “Medea is able to carry out her plan on getting revenge on Jason because King Creon allows her to stay in the city” is a FACT.
  • Instead, let’s say the above writer is trying to prove the following: “Medea is far more persuasive and politically savvy than Antigone in their respective plays.” With this sentence, the writer needs to explain how Medea is more politically savvy than Antigone. There must be MORE to support the claim. Now, the writer might state that Medea successfully convinces the king for more time, she grabs his hand and begs and he softens or gives in.  Here, this detail or fact in the story becomes the writer’s evidence for his/her claim rather than the claim itself.
  • AVOID statements like “this quote shows” (which is grammatically incorrect) or “this quotation shows.”   Simply start with your commentary.  For example, you might write, “Here, Medea appeals to the pity of the king.”
  • SELECT YOUR EVIDENCE CAREFULLY.  USE BETTER EVIDENCE. Some of you are falling into the “I must include quotations in my essay, so here goes” trap.  To quote the chorus saying that “Medea killed her children” doesn’t really tell us much that we don’t already know.  The four words “Medea killed her children” is more a fact than something worth quoting.  But if the chorus stated that “Medea looked her children in the eye and cursed their births in the name of Jason” as she wielded a knife, then we might want to quote the chorus and talk about all of the “heated language” and why it’s significant.
  • DO USE MORE TRANSITIONS in your writing.  “Similarly, Antigone. . .” or “In contrast to Antigone, Medea. . .”
Creative Writing:  Keep working on your blogs and or NanoWrimo.  Don't forget to look at the assignment sheet posted in yesterday's homework.  Woohoo.

In class reading: Please read from page 93 to the top of 108 about Market Segmentation.  We are going to take our primary research and now look carefully at the different types of consumers &/or industries we might target.

I will be giving you a handout tomorrow to look more specifically at your business idea.  Lastly, now that you have more information about your amazing ideas, I will be asking each team to do a revised one minute elevator pitch on their idea --on WEDNESDAY.  Get ready.

Check out the video clips below.  How is each company segmenting or targeting their market?

Welcome back, beautiful people!

ROP Business:  Today we had some shifting in the business.  I have asked a few employees and managers to step down or away from projects based on performance, funding issues, or lack of success.  If I spoke to you today, please know that this "shifting" is not about you personally, but more about how to make the most of the company in the last two weeks of our business.
HW: Remember that our primary research on our business ideas (10 people; 1 page on each person) is due THIS FRIDAY.  Remember that assignment needs to be submitted via GoogleDocs, rather than printing out 30 pages of information about your idea.  Below is a sample of ONE page to give you a sense for how yours might look.

ROP Business: Today the teams worked for 30 minutes, then worked within their teams to talk strategy for their PRIMARY RESEARCH.

  • It's due NEXT FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14th.
  • Each team member must ask TEN people (friends, parents, relatives do not count)
  • Each person you interview = 1 typed page of responses, so each person should have 10 pages of feedback (one for each person he/she interviews)
  • Practice ---remember what happened in class.  Learn from your colleagues and craft questions that allow the person interviewed to answer in detail.   Avoid "yes" and "no" answers.

H9: WOTD: weild, fray, prolixity, prodigious  (POSTPONING ROOTS QUIZ UNTIL NEXT WEDNESDAY)
We discussed ACT I and we DID NOT have a quiz, per your request.  : )  You are welcome.  Additionally, you were tasked with the following:

See you tomorrow!

H9: Read and annotate the rest of Act I.  Yes, there will be a reading quiz.  Yes, I will ask you what words like prolixity, and prodigious mean. : )

ROP Business Management:
  • Create a typed draft of your business resumé.  Target one of the specific areas we mentioned in class today: CEO, CFO, Event Planning, Curation, Food detail and planning, Eco Team.  To the right I have included some samples to help you.  Bring in a printed draft on Tuesday and make sure to e-mail a copy to yourself as we will have lab time on Tuesday to edit our resumés in class.
  • Read this online article about how to create an effective resumé. Remember to disregard the "don't list your hobbies" section as I believe that you are at an age where your hobbies tell us something about you.
Honors English 9:
WOTD: Review all of the ones we have covered thus far
  1. Bring in an "outside reading book" for Tuesday. Remember that it must be age appropriate and not homework from another class.
  2. Draft 3 of your poem - Push your poem in another direction.  Play with sound.  Try metaphor or symbol.  Experiment with color or where the words are on the page.  See you on Tuesday! Have a great weekend.

Creative Writing:
  • We practiced a controlled freewrite  a random story generator prompt for 10 minutes, then we worked on your photograph for 15 minutes.
  • We also read this personal essay and had a discussion: "the Gifted Classes" - Frances Lefkowitz.
  • Other amazing nonfiction examples are on Hippocampus for your reading joy.  You can also post your own here.  Woohoo.  Imagine that?
  • Write in your journal twice over the weekend.  Try 20 minutes at a time and honor the twenty minutes.  Let nothing else distract you.  Be kind to yourself and give yourself some space before you write.
  • Your Memoir Assignment Draft 1 is Due on Thursday, September 4th and your Final Draft is Due on Thursday, September 11th.

ROP Business Management
  1. Print out and read the following article about Linkedin.  We will be making profiles very soon.  Get ready. . . we are about to apply for jobs in the Nest Takeover! Woohoo.
  2. Tomorrow we hear some more presentations and look at sample resumés and cover letters. If you have a resumé and cover letter, bring them in! If you don't, worry, not.
Honors English 9:
WOTD:  7 types of imagery: visual, olfactory, kinesthetic, gustatory, tactile, auditory, organic; trite, hackneyed, juxtaposition, sibilance.

  • Please take Draft 1 of your memory poem and push your poem in a new direction toward "failure" I mentioned in class.  Take two concepts we have explored in class and apply them to your poem.  Look at the samples I gave you and steal a great idea from a published poet.  Play with color, sound, meter, etc.
  • Remember to "SAVE AS" Draft 2.  Keep your Draft 1 and bring it in too.
Creative Writing:  In class today we watched the haiku deck on the rules of Freewriting.  We practiced Freewriting and then practiced giving peer feedback.
For homework:
  • Journal this evening if you can.  Foster your ideas and remember to create space in your life for great ideas to come in.
  • Write an email to your future self and set goals for this class, predictions, questions, advice; record the moment.
  • Bring in a picture of you as a child!
  • Also, please review our Memoir Assignment Sheet to the right.
