  • See all of the materials posted from last night to help move your paper forward.  You will have the entire class period to work tomorrow! Woohoo!

Business Management:
Here is the note from Tanya Johson:
Here are a few important updates about the upcoming competition:
1. Competition May 6th
As companies solidify their business plans and grow their bottom line, it’s time to start working on an annual report for the Competition! I I have attached the 1st place company’s plan from last year and the guidelines and criteria are listed on page 4 of the attachment.  Also, if you move onto the National Competition you will also need to complete a 2 minute commercial (details for that can be found on page 6 of the attached document).

 2. All Annual Reports and Commercials are due to my email by Friday April 24th at 4pm.
This is a strict guideline so please submit prior to Friday.  All teams will attend the competition and have a trade show booth, but the top 10 teams ranked by judges solely by their annual report will also present a 4 minute pitch on May 6th.  The pitch is to follow guidelines of the attached on page 8.  For those selected to present, a PowerPoint will be allowed that is 3 slides or less. This PPT can include a logo, picture of product, and financials for example.  The idea is for the presentation to enhance the presentation, but not be the sole focus. All teams attending, not just those asked to present, will be eligible for various awards and it is mandatory they attend the Competition with a trade show booth to culminate their JA experience.

As an FYI JA’s National Competition in D.C. is also done this way where we submit all plans to JA headquarters and the top 15 teams are invited to attend based on the criteria attached.  We are trying to come as close to their model as possible so the students experience the most success possible at the National competition.

 3. Marketing through our JA website

  • Review the following articles on Medea.  Try to find some ideas to craft an essay around.  Happy reading.
  • Here is a great handout explaining the compare/contrast essay: https://www.sbcc.edu/clrc/files/wl/downloads/WritingaCompareContrastEssay.pdf
  • Here are some ideas about setting up a compare/contrast essay:
  • Compare Contrast Essays:

1.       Make two columns and begin by brainstorming.  Look for nuance.

2.       Give your comparison a point.   Rank the information you have, and then ask yourself the question: “So what?”

3.       List revealing similarities and differences, then ask “So what?”

4.       Focus on one key comparison.  Rank the importance of your items.

5.       Each side must not be given equal space.  Use one comparison primarily to illuminate the other.

6.       Focus on unexpected similarities and differences.

7.       Consider how you want to organize your essay:

a.       Subject A then Subject B

b.      Organize by topic and talk about each: A1B1, A2B2, C1C2, etc.

c.       A then B then A1B1, A2B2, etc.

Business Mangement:
CCAToday: Today the team worked on filling out the app so it can be published.  Woohoo! Additionally, the sales team, Madison and Kinni were tasked with creating a chart with all of the contacts they have made thus far and what transpired based on previous communication.  I asked Rachel and Jay to work on norming the team (with Jared leading the way) with some rules so that every tribe member feels connected to a task. Today, several team members participated in the National Nutrition Day. Well done! The set up looked good! Woohoo!

Lastly, Tali, it's not clear what you are working on within the team so please connect with Rachel and/or Jay tomorrow in class.  Additionally, Isalbelle and Kylie may need new tasks to work on as the company moves forward.

RideNSurf:  We had a team meeting where the team now has the following rules.  Additionally it was clarified that each team member would work on very specific goals to move the company forward while you are all on "hold" to launch your business.
  1. Ian - oversees projects, sends out team emails Monday and Friday. Additionally, he will do research on trending in transportation in the last 10 years.  This will be part of the marketing presentation on Thursday.
  2. Tyler - has repositioned himself in marketing and will work on looking at trends in transportation as well to address why this business is the best opportunity now.  Why now?
  3. Wyatt - will be in charge or filing the company as a corporation and about the functional details of the business.  (operations)
  4. Edward - Was in charge of finance but needs to meet with the team to figure out what he has been working on as of late.
  5. Aram - Will work with Luke on a comparison chart showing RideNSurf's competive advantage.

Here are the team rules:
  • Team members must share all documents.
  • Ian will e-mail the entire team every Monday and Friday (Chufo will be cc'd) to keep everyone on the same page.
  • When you are going to be absent, you must e-mail and or text the entire team so that we can plan accordingly.
  • There will be no gaming, playing during class time.
  • Ian will be here by 9:45 and the rest of the team at 9:38 every day.
  • The team will have a meeting once a week, to air out any critical issues.

Life Support Chargers
The girls moved their table next to the National Nutrition Month Event and rented out only 2 chargers today.  Business is slow.  They may need to address a different strategy to rent out chargers.  Woohoo!
CCA ReSurf Event - I have yet to see the details of the event mapped out.  Hopefully your team worked on the flow of the entire day.  come to me and I will show you a detailed sample.
Creatives. . . You should be blogging!  Woohoo!

H9: WOTD - None
  • Please finish your comparison/contrast chart of the two plays.
  • Book Spin  2.0 continues tomorrow.
Business Management:  Please email me if you have already worked an event!
Here are the work opportunities and sign ups!
  • Tuesday, National Nutrition Month: Kylie S; Isabelle L; Taryn; Austin; Sam
  • Wednesday, Choices Night for Incoming Freshman: Tali; Wyatt; Sam; Rachel
  • May 16th Gala Event: Hannah B; Tali; Julia; Jiten; Annie; Kylie; Lorenzo; Stephanie; Wyatt; Luke; Katrine Kylie B; Isabelle; Spencer; Jay

Hi teams!  Everyone is moving along really well.  Here is what I know thus far:
  • CCA Today - received a beta of the app.  Rachel, Jay and Hannah B will be working on the app tonight and then will publish it. Hannah B proposed creating a short video to use for promotional materials so I have asked Kinni and Madison to work with her on the video as the sales team will use it as a means to educate clients on the vision of the app.   Jared, from HR, has been tasked with contacting Kelsey, the envoy of Joy, and former CCA student to coach him on how to teach the entire team about better commucation and how to sell their app to the school.  Jared has also been tasked with communicating a list of reasons why downloading the app is compelling for the CCA student, parent, etc.   I also asked Jay to share out the app with the team so everyone can see what the product looks like.  Someone should be making live posts in preparation for the app launch. Also we need timelines for everything.  You are so close to greatness.  Don't lose energy now!
  • CCA ReSurf collaboration: Surfboards were delivered to Angela Jackson's class!  Woohoo!  The event is moving forward.  This week we need timelines and follow up on all of the event details.  Congratulations team!
  • RideNSurf: There has been strong marketing on Instagram but I've had no updates about what your team members are working on every day.  I have requested a team meeting tomorrow for your group so we can set some norms to help you through this stressful time.
  • Life Support Chargers - Woohoo!  You launched last Friday and rented out 4 chargers.  Kudos to you!  Now you need to pivot and make sure you set up in the best possible area.  Also, the team talked about using me as a point of contact to rent chargers out all the day long.  I am here for you, team!
Keep in mind. . . Here is our direction for the week:
  1. I have been posting grades for you and some of you folks need to make sure you communicate more within your teams.  This week's goals are around Marketing, Timelines, and exploring the Industry landscape you are working within.
  2. By Thursday you need to have a Marketing plan and timelines, have a few slides documenting the business landscape and competition. Address the questions: Why is your business perfect right at this moment? Why do we need your business now and how is it different from your competition? What do you know about your competition?  You will have 7 minutes to present.  This time you will be graded on time.  So. . . make sure someone on the team practices.  Additionally it cannot be someone who has presented thus far.  This will be your team final.  : )  Woohoo!

Today's Poem:
Rune of the Finland WomanMarilyn Hacker, 1942

                                   For Sára Karig

“You are so wise," the reindeer said, “you can bind the winds of the world in a single strand.”
                                     H. C. Andersen, “The Snow Queen”

She could bind the world’s winds in a single strand.
She could find the world’s words in a singing wind.
She could lend a weird will to a mottled hand.
She could wind a willed word from a muddled mind.

She could wend the wild woods on a saddled hind.
She could sound a wellspring with a rowan wand.
She could bind the wolf’s wounds in a swaddling band.
She could bind a banned book in a silken skin.

She could spend a world war on invaded land.
She could pound the dry roots to a kind of bread.
She could feed a road gang on invented food.
She could find the spare parts of the severed dead.

She could find the stone limbs in a waste of sand.
She could stand the pit cold with a withered lung.
She could handle bad puns in the slang she learned.
She could dandle foundlings in their mother tongue.

She could plait a child’s hair with a fishbone comb.
She could tend a coal fire in the Arctic wind.
She could mend an engine with a sewing pin.
She could warm the dark feet of a dying man.

She could drink the stone soup from a doubtful well.
She could breathe the green stink of a trench latrine.
She could drink a queen’s share of important wine.
She could think a few things she would never tell.

She could learn the hand code of the deaf and blind.
She could earn the iron keys of the frozen queen.
She could wander uphill with a drunken friend.
She could bind the world’s winds in a single strand.

Business Management:
Great presentations today!  Well done.  As we move forward, here is what each team should be working on for next week:
  • CCAToday - Get something in writing about timelines and deadlines for app development.  Also, Lorenzo needs to check in with the app developer to make sure that the CPMs are tracked within the app for billing purposes.  Lastly, the sales team needs to develop some kind of one-pager, or video explaining the app and it's intention.  Do you guys have a website?  If not, launch one next week. People may ask you questions about your business and you need a space to explain and brag about your app.
  • RideNSurf - It's market research time. You need to get on the same page about pricing and exactly who your customer is.  Finish paper work and apply for corporation status.  Woohoo.
  • CCA ReSurf Event - Confirm details with Nate Jarrel, the Art staff, the food contact through ReSurf.  Develop a marketing plan around the event and follow up with Tanner on costs for the space.
  • Life Support Chargers - Launch your business! Start collecting data on phone chargers.  Woohoo! Make sure you have a system to track your users.  Ask questions when people rent out the chargers.  Marketing, marketing, marketing.

Creatives:
  • Your videos are due tomorrow.  Bring your food to share and be ready to have fun.  Defend your art, people!
